Mr. Marcus Wilson Weathersby, 87, of Ellaville, Ga., passed away on Friday, March 3, 2023, at Phoebe-Sumter Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, March 6, 2023, at Ellaville Baptist Church with Rev. Joel Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Ellaville City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mr. Weathersby’s grandsons and great-grandson. Honorary pallbearers include deacons of Ellaville Baptist Church and friend Ismar Villatoro. The family will greet friends at Way-Watson Funeral Home in Ellaville on Sunday, March 5, 2023, from 2:00-6:00 PM. Friends attending the funeral service and visitation are encouraged to wear masks.
Mr. Weathersby was born in Bainbridge, Ga., on August 26, 1935, to Marcus and Louise Cato Weathersby, and grew up in Pine Hill, Ga. After graduating from Bainbridge High School, he served honorably in the Air Force and was a member of the American Legion Post #191. As a member of Ellaville Baptist Church, he was previously chairman of the deacons and taught Sunday school for a number of years.
Mr. Weathersby graduated from the University of Georgia in 1960 and was employed as a county agent in Newnan and Griffin. He then moved to Schley county, April, 1966, as University of Georgia Extension Director. He received a State and National Distinguished Service Award in 1983 before retiring from the University of Georgia Extension Service in August of 1990. During his tenure as Schley County Extension Agent, he worked with numerous young people in 4-H. One of his initiatives was a blue-bird house project done annually by Schley County 4-Hers which helped increase the blue bird population.
Mr. Weathersby lived by the creed: “Your word is your bond. Your handshake is your word.” He was known for his firm handshake and smile.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann Johnson Weathersby, by a daughter, Nancy Lynn Weathersby, and by his brother, Butch Weathersby.
He is survived by his wife Mary Jane Haley Weathersby of Ellaville, Ga.; by four children, Randall (Randy) and Judi Weathersby, Annita and John Belcher, all of Ellaville, Ga., David and Cathy Butler Weathersby of Charlestown, Ind., and Mary and Derek Kennedy of Pine Mountain, Ga.; two brothers, Wallace Weathersby of Leesburg, Ga., and Kirby Weathersby of Covington, Ga.; grandchildren Marc Weathersby, Richie Weathersby, Karen Weathersby, Michael and Catrina Hernandez, John M. Belcher, Will Weathersby, Samantha “Sami” Weathersby, Shelby Weathersby, Haley Kennedy, Garrett Kennedy, Rees Kennedy, and great grandchildren, Colby and Madison Hernandez.
