Ellen Virginia McCranie was born October 8, 1926, in Bainbridge, Ga., the daughter of KC and Lou Ellen Hunt McCranie. She was a graduate of Bainbridge High School. Shortly after high school, Virginia married the love of her life, Sherwood Kitchengs. She retired with over thirty years as a switchboard operator with BellSouth. Virginia was a faithful member of First Baptist Church.
“Miss Virginia” was the epitome of a southern lady. She was the first on scene if help was needed. She didn’t slow down a bit and always had a plan. Virginia enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Sharing a meal was her love language. If you were sick or sad, you could count on “Miss Virginia” to show up with a little something. The beaches of the Gulf Coast and a hot deck of cards were right up her alley. Generations of beach-goers have fond memories of playing cards at Top of The Gulf with “Miss Virginia”.
Survivors include her nieces & nephews, Lynn & Rodney Heard, Maryan & Bill Harrell, OA “Boakie” Kitchengs III, Marty & Brenda Ard, and Linda Ard; her sister-in-law, Wynona H. McCranie; and her dear friend, Clauden Jones. In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Sherwood W. Kitchengs, and her siblings, Louise M. Ard and William K, “Buddy” McCranie.
