In today’s world, a little positivity can go a long way. The Positive Athlete Georgia program is aimed at promoting and recognizing positivity among student athletes across the state, with the program naming two BHS athletes as winners for the Southwest Georgia region: Paige Overman of the golf team, and Angel Peterson from the track team.

The Positive Athlete program has seven definitions of a positive athlete: an optimistic attitude; an encouraging teammate; a servant leader; a heart for others; admits to imperfections; always gives 100%; and puts the team first. It describes itself as “a celebration of young athletes who have overcome difficult circumstances, given back to their schools and communities in a significant way, or just have an infectious positive attitude that makes everyone around them a better person.”

For her part, Overman has done a lot of volunteer work as president of Anchor Club. “We’ve done presents for the Friendship House, and even outside of Anchor Club I’ve done stuff for FBLA.” Some of these volunteer projects included making ornaments for retirement homes and taking Easter baskets for the hospital.

Her coach, golf coach Rex Wade, praised Overman, saying, “Paige is such an inspiration to our golf program. We are so proud of Paige being selected as the Positive Athlete.” He continued, “She is so deserving of this award. Each and every day she lives to be positive; on the course, in school and in her personal life!”

Peterson performs in long and triple jump in track, and stated that she recently qualified to go to state. Track coach Tan Phillips bragged on Peterson, saying, “Angel is the student athlete that always work to be successful. She gives 100% in everything she does, even when it seems unreachable, she always finds a way to get it done!”

In addition to these students, Bainbridge High School itself was named Most Positive High School for the region as well.
