Sarah Margarett Duett was born February 5, 1944, in Philadelphia, Miss., the daughter of Edgar & Irene Evans Duett. After high school, she married and raised a family in the land of her Ol’ Miss Rebels. In 1986, Mamaw decided to shake up the scene and moved to Southwest Georgia. She was a member of West Bainbridge Baptist Church.

Straight forward, outspoken, generous, and kind, Margarett, better known as “Mamaw” to most everyone, never met a stranger. She asked more questions than a news reporter because she loved to be in the know. Mamaw was a sports fanatic and a grandchild fanatic. (That combination made for interesting ball games. And believe it or not, the “grandchild” didn’t have to be blood kin for her to stake a claim.) Her favorite professional baseball teams were the NY Yankees and Atlanta Braves. She could roll off statistics and opinions like a paid agent. She was a diehard Ole’ Miss fan. NASCAR, particularly Dale Earnhardt, managed to hold her attention on Sunday afternoons. Mamaw believed  Coca-Cola could cure what ailed you and never went to a ballgame, or anywhere else, without at least one in her bag.

Survivors include her children, Susan & Charles Rathel of Bainbridge, Brian Gressett of Hattiesburg, Miss., and Tammy & Tim Walters of Harvest, Ala.; her siblings, Benny (Vanessa) Duett of Meridian, Miss., and Nancy Duett of Baton Rouge, La.; her grandchildren, Misty & Jamie, Chane & Rhonda, Andy, Chad & Allison, Haley, Cabe, Karen, Stacy, Stevie, and Hannah; her great-grandchildren, Taylor, Mason, Kailyn, Macee, Ava, AJ, Callan, Frankie, Halle, Harper, Harrison, and Trey; and her great-great-grandson, Ethan. In addition to her parents, Margarett was preceded in death by her sons, Phillip Gressett and Brad Gressett; her brothers, Frank Duett and Tommy Duett; and her grandchild, Stacey.
