Cougars split games over weekend

The GCA Cougars faced off against Fullington Academy Friday night, taking home an impressive win, 71-39.
Carter Hathcoat led the boys in the first quarter, scoring 11 points through several free throws and lay-ups.
Jafus Ferguson trailed not too far after Hathcoat, scoring 7 points, followed by Kevin Brooks with 4 points. Corrin McKay and Keith Eidson each had two points for the boys as well, bringing the boys total in the first quarter to 25 points.
Hathcoat led the team yet again in the second quarter, scoring 6 points, followed by Ferguson, who scored four points, while Brooks made a three-point shot. McKay also netted two points in the quarter.
The boys only scored 15 points in the second quarter.
After breaking for halftime, the Cougars came back out swinging. Hathcoat claimed 7 points, while Brooks and Ferguson scored 6 each. McKay and Dawson Worsley contributed 2 points each, bringing the Cougar’s score for the third quarter to 23 points.
While the team scored less in the fourth quarter, it was still more than enough to secure a victory. Ben Faircloth scored 5 points with a three-point shot and a layup, while Spencer Blanton made a three-point shot.
The boys scored 8 points in the fourth quarter.
“We’ve been working on running the floor, a little fast break,” Coach Lance Godwin told the Post-Searchlight Friday night. “That’s what we’ve been working on… both of them (boys and girls teams). A lot of man-to-man defense. We’ve been working on a lot of defense and a lot of fast-break offense transition, and that’s what we did in both games, and it paid off pretty good there.”
The Varsity Boys would then go up against Covenant Academy Saturday afternoon, ultimately losing, 61-81.
This time it was Brooks that led in the first quarter, scoring 12 points with 3 three-point shots, a layup and a free throw. Hathcoat and Ferguson each had 3 points, while McKay scored 2 points.
The boys started off strong against Covenant, scoring 20 points in the first quarter.
The team faltered slightly during the second quarter, only scoring 16 points.
Hathcoat made major gains for the team, scoring 9 points. Keith Eidson scored 3 points, while McKay and Brooks only scored 2 a piece.
The boys only faired slightly better after halftime, scoring 17 points in the third quarter. Brooks scored 8 points, making two three-pointers and a layup.
McKay scored 4 points, followed by Hathcoat with 3 and Eidson with 2.
The Cougars only scored 8 points in the fourth quarter.
Hathcoat scored 3 points for the team, while Worsley and Brooks individually scored 2, and McKay made a free throw.
The Cougar’s next home game will be this Thursday, starting at 7:30.
