Martha Wilson Mitchell, 85, of Bainbridge, Ga., passed away Tuesday, August 24, 2021.

The memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 27, 2021, at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor John Erthein officiating. Visitation will immediately follow the service. Due to the ongoing concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, those attending are asked to wear protective masks in accordance with the State of Georgia guidelines.

Martha was born May 31, 1936, in Clinton, S.C., the daughter of Lowry and Violet Crisp Wilson. She was a graduate of Clinton High School, Erskine College, and received her Master’s Degree in Library Science from Emory University. While living in Greenville, S.C., she taught at Parker High School and Greenville Technical College. Upon moving to Bainbridge in 1973, she became the assistant librarian at Bainbridge College, a position she still held until her retirement, and then she became the library associate until her death. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the American Library Association.

Survivors include her husband, James O. Mitchell of Bainbridge, Ga.; her son, James O. Mitchell, Jr. of Tallahassee, Fla.; her brother, Lowry M. Wilson, Jr. of Powdersville, S.C.; her sister, Brenda W. Jamison (Dallas) of Charlotte, N.C.; and her grandsons, Austin Mitchell and Evan Mitchell. Martha was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Kathryn E. Mitchell; and her brothers, William Wilson and Roy Wilson.
