Bearcat Varsity Soccer team wins on Senior Night

The Bearcat Varsity Boys soccer team defeated Monroe 10-2 on senior night .

In between two tough region defeats to Cairo and Thomas County the Bainbridge High School Bearcats exploded for ten goals in a 10-2 victory over the Monroe High School Tornadoes at Centennial field.

Bainbridge took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute on goal scored by Bearcat Senior Forward Jose Avalo. On the play Junior Midfielder Mason Ard sent a pass to Avalo who finished off the scoring shot from twelve yards away.

Bearcat Freshman midfielder Nick Tyre followed up with the second goal, in the 20th minute, to give Bainbridge a 2-0 lead. Bearcat Freshman Forward Brock Williams assisted in the goal following a lofted corner kick that skipped over the Monroe goalkeeper’s hands and into the path of Tyre who tapped it in just inches from the goal.

Bainbridge Senior Twin brothers Ashton and Aiden Matthews scored goals late in the first half, to give the Bearcats a comfortable 4-0 halftime lead.

Avalo sent a lofted pass to the top of the Monroe penalty area, that Ashton Matthews alertly headed the ball past the Tornado goalkeeper’s hands, and then was on for a breakaway scoring shot from a few feet away, in the 37th minute.

Just 21 seconds later Avalo dropped a pass off to Aiden Matthews, in the penalty area who scored from 10 yards out.

In the second half Avalo scored again, in the 45th minute, with a heading shot following a crossing corner kick from Ashton Matthews to expand the score to 5-0.

Ard scored on a nice shot from 23 yards away to give the Bearcats a 6-0 on an assist by Avalo.

Avalo scored two more goals in the 48th and 62nd minutes on assists by Ladarius Smith and Ashton Matthews. Monroe had scored a goal in between the two, but Bainbridge had a commanding 8-1 lead.

Monroe scored again in the 71st minute, before Bainbridge finished off the scoring in the 76th and 78th minute.

Bearcat senior Angel Guzman scored the ninth goal, on a shot from the top of the penalty area set up by Aiden Matthews.

The final goal came on goal by Senior Javier Salgado who flicked in a heading shot from six yards away, that was sent in by Ard following a Free Kick to give Bainbridge a 10-2 victory.

The game prior to the Monroe victory saw the Bearcats lose a 2-1 heartbreaking penalty shootout with Cairo at Centennial field..

Avalo helped give Bainbridge a 1-0 first half lead with a penalty kick in the 30th minute following a handball foul by Cairo.

Cairo scored in the 64th minute of the second half to tie the score following a skirmish for the ball, that a Syrupmaker knocked in from six yards out.

The game extended into overtime and neither team to get a shot to cross sending it into a penalty kick shootout. Unfortunately for Bainbridge only two penalty kicks were scored, by Avalo and Williams, opposed to four by the visitors resulting in the Cairo victory.

Just before the beginning of the Bainbridge spring break the Bearcats dropped a 6-0 loss to region rival Thomas County Central.
