Joan Griffin was born December 2, 1938 in Decatur County, Ga., the daughter of George and Louise Mitchell Griffin. She was a graduate of Bainbridge High School. She married Benjamin N. Long in 1957 and they made their home in Bainbridge. Joan was a member of Black Jack Baptist Church where she served as a choir leader for adults and youth for several years.

Joan was a homebody, and home was either in Bainbridge or at the beach. She was a talented pianist and loved to sing. She enjoyed shopping and always had a little chocolate tucked away for snack. Rocking a grandchild to the tune of an old hymn brought a peace over her household that could not be explained. Family filled Joan’s heart with joy, and she spoiled her grandchildren like only a good Granny could, especially at Christmas.

Survivors include her children, Phil & Diane Long and Steve & Amy Long, all of Bainbridge; her grandchildren, Alex Long, Tyler Long, Jason Long, Griffin Long, and Ivy & Brian Merriman; her sister, Diane Gibson of Ocilla, Ga; and her brothers-in-law, Bud West, Roy Boyd and Thomas McCook. In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband, of 63 years, Ben Long; and her sisters, Ethlen West, Mary Williams, Becky McCook, and Ella Phillips.

The Long Family would like to extend their gratitude to Michele Hester, staff at The Bridge Medical Group, Memorial Hospital Same Day Surgery nurses and Integrity Hospice for their exceptional care, kindness and compassion.
