Myrtle N. Smith passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at 93 years of age. She was preceded in death by her husband of seventy years, Willis Smith, her father, mother, and six brothers.
Myrtle was born on February 26, 1927, the fourth of seven children born to John and Emma Neely. She graduated from Faceville High School and went on to attend Albany State College earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and was certified by the American Nursing Association in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing and in Nursing Administration. She was named to the Who’s Who in Nursing by the Society of Nursing Professionals for significant contribution to the field of nursing. She would retire from the Florida State Hospital as a Registered Nurse Consultant in the General Psychiatric Unit.
Myrtle was a faithful member of Sylvania United Methodist Church and served in various capacities within the church throughout her life. She was named a Quiet Disciple of her United Methodist Women’s group.
Myrtle was also a member of Woodman of the World, serving as the Secretary of her local Lodge for twelve years and received the Woman of Woodcraft Award for her faithful service. Together with her husband, Willis, they were awarded the Fraternal Spirit Award.
She is survived by two sons, Ronald (Gail) Smith & Dennis (Denise) Smith, three grandchildren, Paul (Belinda) Smith, Michael Smith (Julia Cameron), & Susannah (Matt) Langdale, one step-granddaughter, Esther Phillips, four great-grandchildren, Brenton Smith, Elizabeth Smith, Gray Langdale, & Eli Langdale, four step-great-grandchildren, Christian Phillips, Alexandra Moore, Mary Moore, & Benjamin Moore, a special nephew, Tim Neely, and her beloved cat, Slinky.
Graveside services will be Saturday, September 5, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Sylvania Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sylvania Cemetery. C/O Russell Smith, 428 Smithtown Road, Bainbridge, Ga. 39819.
