Leon Ashley Godwin was born May 12, 1941 in Bainbridge, Ga., the son of Kneely and Dollie Mae Kelly Godwin. He was a graduate of Climax High School. He worked for a number of years at ITT and Amoco Fabrics before joining the staff of Ivey Funeral Home. Leon was a member of Beulah Thomas Baptist Church.

Like a Boy Scout, Mr. Leon was always prepared. He never left home without his boots. He thoroughly enjoyed doing anything he wasn’t supposed to, especially if the recommendation came from a young whippersnapper. Mr. Leon loved to tinker outdoors with his tractor, in his garden and anywhere the fish were biting. He rarely said no if he thought he could help you or “fix it”. He was generous with his time and worked until the work was done. Mr. Leon had a way with people, since he knew quite a few in this area, and put them at ease during difficult times. He was a leader and mentor at Ivey Funeral Home always looking out for “his people”.

Survivors include his children, Lee & Tammi Godwin, Debbie & John Roberts, Sandy & Gary Hasenbalg, Tammy Aurand, and Robert & Andrea Givens; his sister, Lavon Parker of Lancaster, SC; his grandchildren, Nick & Carla, Ashley, Alex & Ashley, Wesley & Ashley, Taylor, Tyler, Brittany & Jonathan, and Taylor & Bryan; and his great-grandchildren, Brock, Caden, Tori, Dustin, Carter, Rylan, Weston, Walker, Oaklynn, and Hampton. In addition to his parents, Leon was preceded in death by his wives, Sylvia Godwin and Betty Godwin; his daughter, Joy Godwin Clark; and his siblings, Lois Adams, Louise Adams, Frank Thomas, Bill Thomas, and Charles Thomas.
