As the 4th of July holiday approaches and the air is filled with the sounds of fireworks, the Bainbridge-Decatur County Humane Society is making recommendations on keeping animals safe and comfortable amidst all the noise.

Many animals, and especially dogs, are afraid of fireworks and will do just about anything to get away from them, including running away. Shelter Director Ashley White reminds us that more dogs go missing over July 4th, than any other time of the year. She advises pet owners should be sure their pets are wearing their collars with an ID tag, or that they have been chipped.

She provided a few easy tips on how to keep your dogs at home in relative comfort.

The best advice is to bring and keep them inside, and if you know they have anxiety problems, you might want to contact your veterinarian to obtain some medical help.

She recommends playing the TV or some calming music to help set a better environment, keep the windows closed and the blinds or curtains closed to deflect the bright lights.

Maybe your animal has a safe room, such as a bathroom, or closet where they go in storms. If so, you may want to consider helping them find that safe place.

Above all else, White says, “Do not take your dog to public places where there are fireworks.”

The Shelter will be closed on July 4 and 5, and if, in spite of your best efforts your dog disappears, you are encouraged to make contact with Animal Control and the Shelter on July 6 to advise of the dog’s appearance, when and where it was last seen. In addition, post a photo on your Facebook page.
