Joseph Calvin Hartzog was born June 20, 1948 in Donalsonville, Ga., the son of James and Myra Fleming Hartzog. He was a graduate of Attapulgus High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Valdosta State. Joe worked as a counselor with Vocational Rehabilitation. He was a member of Attapulgus Baptist Church.
Being an “Attapulgite” was a badge Joe gladly wore. He loved his community and often did things for others no one knew about. He had a generous spirit, always lending a helping hand, and never wanted to be publicly credited for his deeds. Joe enjoyed the company of his friends and usually made friends by breaking the ice with a wisecrack or joke.
Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Frances Hartzog; his children, Garrett Thomas Hartzog of Attapulgus, Sharon & Lance Hines of Tallahassee, Fl., Vickie Sexton also of Tallahassee, and Christopher & Adriana Tramel of Brazil; his mother, Myra Hartzog; his brother, Steve Hartzog and his wife, Jane, of Columbus, Ga.; his nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Joe was preceded in death by his father, James Cleveland Hartzog.
