Students at Potter Street Elementary who completed their book summaries for the second nine weeks were treated to a paint party last week at the Firehouse Arts Center.
Media specialist, Samantha Palmer explained PSE does not require students to complete A.R., however students complete book summaries once they finish reading a book.
“They write about the character, the setting or facts if it’s a true story,” Palmer said.
If the students completed a certain amount, they could partake in the reading celebration, which varies each nine weeks. Palmer said this nine weeks they had approximately 90 students who got to join in on the reading celebration, which included painting a Christmas picture with artist, Lynn Davis.
Palmer said she thinks these reading celebrations excite the kids and do encourage them, because the celebrations vary. Last nine weeks, the kids were treated to snow cones and have extra recess time.
“This time we wanted to do something totally different,” she said. “Some of them have never been to the Firehouse Gallery.”
One of the students, Cassie Kelley, who is in the first grade, got to participate in Monday’s party.
Kelley said she read eight books this nine weeks and couldn’t wait to see what they were doing.
“I was really excited, painting is really fun,” Kelley said.
Following the painting, students toured the Firehouse Arts Center, before returning to school.
Palmer encouraged the students to continue reading and be a part of the third nine weeks celebration, which will feature other fun activities for them.
