The Bainbridge Book Club celebrated its 90th anniversary with a gala event on Saturday, October 26. The celebration was held at the lovely home of Mrs. Lesley Simmons, a long-time member of the club.
The club, founded in September 1929, has been meeting continuously since its inception. Eight Bainbridge women began the literary club in order to foster intellectual, mental and social development of members. The original name was “Lesche Club,” which means “meeting of the literary.”
The club, limited to 25 active members, meets twice per month in the homes of members to enjoy reviews of works of nonfiction.
Current president, Mrs. Jean Reynolds, welcomed attendees and Mrs. Joyce Leverett offered a sentimental toast. The evening featured a delicious catered meal, vocal and instrumental performances, and shared thoughts and remembrances from club members old and new. For the 90th anniversary celebration, both members’ spouses and past club members were also invited to attend.
The three longest-tenured members of the club are Vera Custer, Hilda Hines and Lesley Simmons.
