Decatur County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jordan Phillips conducted a traffic stop Saturday evening for failure to maintain lane, which led to the arrest of Hugh Hutchinson Jr. for multiple possession of drug charges.

Phillips was performing routine security checks on local businesses on Spring Creek Road Saturday, when he noticed a silver Chrysler fail to maintain their lane.

Phillips activated his siren and pulled over the vehicle. As Phillips approached the driver, Hutchinson, he could smell a strong odor of marijuana. Phillips asked Hutchinson if he had been smoking.

Hutchinson admitted to smoking marijuana before leaving his house. Phillips asked Hutchinson if there was anything else he should know, when Hutchinson handed him a tan backpack.

Phillips was shocked to open up the backpack and find two large mason jars of suspected marijuana, a large amount of suspected cocaine, suspected MDMA pills, suspected crystal methamphetamine and small baggies packaged for cocaine usage.

Phillips turned the case over to Investigator Vincent Edmond, who was proud of this large bust.

“We are happy because this is a very large amount of drugs off the street,” Edmond said.

Hutchinson was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, trafficking cocaine, possession of meth with intent to distribute, failure to maintain lane, possession of MDMA with intent to distribute, possession of drug related objects and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. The investigation is still ongoing, but Edmond hopes to be able to get more drugs off the street in the near future.
