Seventh, eighth grade Bearcats handle business against Dothan Prep

Tuesday afternoon the Bainbridge Middle School 7th and 8th grade Bearcats football team hosted the Dothan Preparatory Academy, from Dothan Alabama, and won by scores of 18-8 and 34-16 respectfully.

In the 7th grade game the Bearcats scored with 2:16 left in the first quarter to take a 6-0 lead. Bainbridge Runningback Thomas Brenton took a pitch from Quarterback Camryn Scott and on a sweep play to the left, raced 20 yards for the touchdown. Scott’s run to the right for the two point conversion failed.

The Bearcats increased their lead at with only 44 seconds left in the second quarter as Bainbridge Wide Receiver Keymarion Cox caught an eighteen yard touchdown pass from Quarterback Daniel Pyles. Brenton’s run for the conversion failed and Bainbridge had an 12-0 lead.

On the first play following the ensuing kickoff Brenton stripped the ball from the Dothan running back and recovered it at the Dothan 24.

Two plays later only 5 seconds remaining in the half,  Bainbridge hit paydirt again as Pyles found Cox on a 24 yard pass play for the touchdown. Cox had found an opening and raced past three Dothan defenders for the score.

Brenton’s conversion run ended up just inches short of the goal, and Bainbridge had a comfortable 18-0 lead at the half.

Dothan’s lone touchdown came with 46 seconds remaining as runningbackJayden Barnes scored from 2 yards out and also converted the two point conversion to make the final score 18-8 in favor of the Bearcats.

The victory was the first win on the season for the 7th grade Bearcats,making  their record at 1-2 on the season following defeats to Thomas County and Washington (Cairo) by scores of 26-8 and 28-8 respectfully.

In the nightcap the 8th grade Bearcats scored 28 first half points in route to a 34-16 victory at Centennial field.

Bainbridge took an  8-0 lead with 2:01 left in the first quarter following a 21 yard touchdown scoring strike.

Bearcat Wide Receiver AJ Grant got behind two Dothan defenders in the endzone catching a pass from quarterback Cam Sanders for the score. Bainbridge running back Javon Cox raced around right end for the 2 point conversion.

Dothan quarterback Christian Peterson helped the Wolves tie the game at 8 a piece, as he scrambled 16 yards for a touchdown with 5:43 left in the 2nd quarter. He then threw a pass to Wide Receiver Jalen Corbitt, who got open in the flats for the two point conversion.

Cox helped the Bearcats regain the lead at 14-8, as he ripped off a 59 yard run with 3:23 left in the 2nd quarter, but he was tackled in the backfield to deny the two point conversion.

On the next series Dothan ran six plays, but eventually faced a fourth down from their 35 yard line and lined up to punt.

On the snap Bainbridge pressured the kick and the ball deflected off a Dothan player into the air at the Dothan 38 yard line, Bainbridge Defensive end Malik Kendrick alertly caught it and then maneuvered himself all the way into the endzone for another Bearcat score with 52 seconds left before halftime..

Bearcat Running back Travious Freeman took a pitch from Sanders for the 2pt conversion score and Bainbridge led 22-8.

On the ensuing kick off a Bainbridge defender knocked the ball loose from the Dothan return man and recovered it at the Dothan 35.

On the first play the Bearcats scored on a razzle dazzle play to complete the scoring in the first half.

Bainbridge wide Receiver Carl Boldin took a handoff from Freeman on a reverse and then heaved a pass to Grant who caught the ball behind a defender at the six yard line and waltzed into the endzone with only 13 seconds left in the 2nd quarter. The 2point conversion try failed and Bainbridge went into the half with a 28-8 lead.

Both teams each scored in the fourth quarter for the final score.

Bainbridge scored with 2:43 remaining in the game, as Grant caught a 22 yard pass from Sanders down the left sideline for the touchdown. The conversion attempt failed and Bainbridge led 34-8.

Dothan scored the final points in the contest as Peterson found Running back KeAvion Durry on a short pass and he weaved his way for a 29 yard touchdown. Peterson scored the two point conversion on a option play to the left, making what proved to be the final score 34-16 in favor of Bainbridge

The Bainbridge 8th grade team is undefeated on the season at 3-0 as they defeated Thomas County 22-14 and shutting out Washington (Cairo) 20-0..
