Monday evening at approximately 6:25 p.m., Bainbridge Public Safety responded to an overturned vehicle with entrapments at the intersection of Water Street and Donalson Street. Upon arrival, they found the driver, Manuel Caballero to be heavily intoxicated and the subject of many erratic driving calls throughout the day.

Public information officer, Julie Harris said they received a call earlier that day that Caballero was driving erratically, going what one driver claimed was 80 mph down Shotwell Street. The driver decided to follow Caballero to help BPS locate him, but after Caballero passed two vehicles and sped away, the driver lost him and hung up.

The driver then decided to head downtown, where he found Caballero’s vehicle flipped over and redialed BPS.

Accident reports indicate that Caballero lost control of the vehicle, spun, hit the curb and eventually overturned.

BPS officer Richard Collins arrived on scene and saw Caballero trying to crawl out of the vehicle, as other agencies arrived on hand. Firefighter, Tyler Dalton said he saw Caballero earlier coming from the college swerve and knock over multiple cones near the roadwork section, but lost him as he sped up.

Collins then conducted a standardized field sobriety test on Caballero, after hearing these accounts and smelling the odor of alcohol. Collins observed six clues that Caballero was intoxicated and placed him under arrest. He was charged with a DUI, failure to maintain lane and driving too fast for conditions.
