Edward Orvia Perry was born March 26, 1922 in Climax, the son of John L. and Sara Kathryn Kelly Perry. He was a graduate of Climax High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He married Dorothy Stewart and they made their home in Climax. Mr. Ed retired from Union Oil Company and then worked at Barber Fertilizer until his second retirement at age 95. He was the oldest and longest serving member of Climax Baptist Church.
Words are inadequate as you describe this sweet soul born into “The Greatest Generation”. Mr. Ed was known far and wide throughout southwest Georgia. His love for others was in the little things like sharing fish he had already cleaned, vegetables he grew himself or a cake he baked. He served at Climax Baptist Church as a deacon for over 70 years and made the sweet tea for all church functions. Mr. Ed loved the outdoors, fishing and yard work. Tom Brokaw is quoted as saying this is the “greatest generation any society has ever produced” and Mr. Ed Perry certainly lived his life story accordingly.
Survivors include his children, Charles & Marian Perry of Bainbridge and Kaye Perry Hickox of Climax; his grandchildren, Gray Hickox, Ashley & Zane Griffin and Annie Rose & Dan Hogan; and his great-grandson, Perry Lane Griffin. In addition to his parents, Mr. Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy S. Perry; his son, James Edward Perry; and his siblings, John L. Perry, W.H. Perry, James “Sonny” Perry, Katie Mae McRae and Laurine Beasley.
