Tuesday afternoon the Bearcats and Lady Cats tennis teams faced off against Ola and Eagle’s Landing for the first round of state playoffs, where they dominated in a complete shutout.
Going into the day’s matches, senior Sydnee Burke said they were feeling nervous, but excited.
“We have practiced and prepared for this and no matter what happens, we will win as a team or lose as a team,” she said.
Burke did not know much about their opponents, but said a few years back they put them out during the state playoffs, however this time fellow team member Gracie Surratt insisted it was “comeback season,” and she was right.
Burke hit the courts and beat out her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Number two singles, Mikey Harrell also took the win 6-0, 6-1 and Surratt gave up no points, winning 6-0, 6-0.
Number one doubles, Bree Powell and Jade Stacey continued to dominate winning 6-1, 6-1, along with number two doubles, Sarah Caroline Darley and Anna Marie Hall, who won 6-1, 6-1.
The Bearcats were determined to keep the momentum going and win as well. Robert Bryan Shockley started them off with a win of 6-0, 6-0. The team put all their power into the matches and was in it to win it.
Cole Buchanan won his sets 6-1, 6-3. Number three singles, Austin Aldridge won against his opponent 6-1, 6-1.
Both doubles teams were on fire. Number one doubles, Lawson Humphrey and Brent Miller won 6-1, 6-0 and so did twins, Ben and Brad Mitchell.
With these wins under their belt, the Bearcats and Lady Cats will host Wayne County in the second round of the state playoffs on Monday at 2 p.m. at home.
The team hopes to see everyone’s support as they continue their journey to state.
