Board of Elections to receive comments, discuss potential change of polling location

The Decatur County Board of Elections would like input from voters who vote within the Coliseum’s precinct polling site on the potential relocation to the Charles H. Kirbo Regional Center.
The Board of Elections will discuss the potential relocation of the Coliseum polling site at its next scheduled meeting on Tuesday, April 9, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Elections Office, 122 W. Water St.
When the Coliseum was used by FEMA following Hurricane Michael, Southern Regional Technical College graciously opened the doors of the Charles H. Kirbo Regional Center as the polling location for those voters within the Coliseum precinct. There were several positive comments, and the Board of Elections was asked to explore a potential relocation.
Relocating the Coliseum polling location does not impact voters in any of the other eight county precincts and doesn’t affect any boundaries of the Coliseum precinct.
The Board of Elections will also consider at this meeting the closing of the Fairgrounds for advance voting only. The Board will consider that all advance voting will be conducted at the Elections Office.
Under the proposal, the Fairgrounds will continue to be an Election Day polling location.
There are several positive factors in using the Elections Office as the only advance voting location, among those factors are cost savings, and perhaps less confusion in future elections when voters who vote in advance believing that the advance voting location is their Election Day polling location.
