Bainbridge FFA holds August meeting, has fun playing slip-n-slide kickball

The Bainbridge High FFA Chapter held its first FFA meeting of the year on Tuesday. The kickoff meeting was held at the high school at 6 p.m. The theme for the meeting was Slip-N-Slide Kickball.

The 2018-19 BHS FFA Officer team opened the meeting with opening ceremonies. Following opening ceremonies, Chaplain Weston Powell gave the innovation and directed students to the serving lines for dinner. While FFA members were enjoying their meals, the officers discussed upcoming events in the chapter.

Historian Madalyn Yancey discussed the upcoming South Region Leadership Rally in Tifton, GA. The BHS FFA Chapter will take freshman FFA members to this leadership day event. The event registration fee is $40. This is to cover the cost of registration, lunch, transportation and a t-shirt. We will depart before school and return to BHS within the 5 o’clock hour. The day will be filled with leadership water games. Students will need to bring a change of clothes and a towel.

Chaplain Weston Powell discussed the upcoming Career Development Events (CDE’s) that will be held at Brooks County High School on Sept. 25. The CDE’s that we will be competing in will be Job Interview, Meats Evaluation, Land Judging, Farm Business Management, Floral Design and FFA Quiz.

Sentinel Taylor Barber informed the members about the trip to the Sunbelt Ag Expo in Moultrie, GA. BHS FFA members will be traveling to the Sunbelt Ag Expo on October 17th. Taylor explained that  there are also over 300 different seminars and demonstrations offered over the course of the 3-day event covering topics such as Beef Cattle Management, Equine, Goat & Sheep Health, Fish/Pond Management, Alpaca, Dairy, Poultry, Electrical Safety, backyard gardening and sustainable living topics. The Expo works with 22 Land Grant Colleges and Universities from the Southeastern U.S. to provide these educational opportunities at no additional cost to the Expo visitors. This year there will also be competitions for our FFA members to compete in. These contests include Animal Science ID, Wildlife ID, Lawnmower Driving, Tractor Driving, Forestry ID, and Floral Design.

Reporter Faith Taunton spoke about the Chicken Que. The Chicken Que will be September 6th from 3 p.m.-6 p.m. at the BHS Ag Shop. FFA members were given tickets to sell and return by Aug. 31. The tickets are $8 and the plates include one half of a chicken, potato chips, coleslaw, bread and a piece of cake.

BHS FFA President Luke Jones and Historian Madalyn Yancey closed the meeting with the official closing ceremonies and instructed students on the rules of the Slip-N-Slide Kickball game. Unfortunately, the game ended on short notice due to weather but the members decided to postpone this game until the September meeting. The FFA members in attendance were: Jordan Stout, Faith Taunton, Luke Jones, Pierce Taunton, Cayden Harrell, Weston Powell, Taylor Barber, Brent Miller, Katie Calhoun, Garrett Roland, Zach Buchanan, Lizzy Thompson, Nikita Harrell, Madalyn Yancey, Juan Escamilla, Adron Ingle, Logan Grubbs, Jordan Myers, Adolofo Izaguirre, Wesley Lamb, Lex Thompson, and Casey Clemons. The next BHS FFA meeting will be held on September 18th.
