Saturday morning, Decatur County Fire and Rescue was dispatched to a single vehicle accident at the intersection of Sasser Store Road and Old Whigham Road.

It had not started raining, when the driver for unknown reasons ran off the road and hit a telephone pole. The driver was accompanied by her five-year-old daughter and they were both trapped in the car.

DCFR and Georgia State Patrol both responded to the scene, where they had to extricate the driver from the vehicle. DCFR Captain Kenny King said the accident pushed everything away, except for the driver door, which was pushed on top of the driver’s legs.

King said it took approximately 20 minutes for their unit to cut off her back door and create a hole to let her escape. The daughter was uninjured and they were also able to get her out.

The driver was airlifted from the scene, due to her injuries. King was told she suffered two fractured legs and minor cuts and scrapes.

GSP is still investigating the cause of the accident, but King said it could’ve been any range of things.

These types of crashes can be common when the driver is not paying attention or talking with a passenger.
