The Bainbridge-Decatur Recreation Authority has had a fun- filled week exposing kids of all ages to a variety of sports and new techniques at their kid’s sports camp.
The camp was designed to be an exposure camp that allows kids to have a chance playing all types of different sports, without dedicating themselves to a whole season.
Monday the kids got a lesson in soccer, Tuesday in tennis, Wednesday in softball and baseball and Thursday they finished learning the basics of flag football.
Programs director, Karson King thinks exposing the kids to all these different sports is a great idea, because they may become interested in trying new things.
She explained that one of the campers, who plays nothing but soccer was very interested in the day they played tennis. He asked a lot of questions about how to take lessons and really wanted to understand the basics of the game.
“I think this camp will definitely have an impact in the people who go to the tennis center,” King said.
Lane Ulm, 6, loves baseball and said it is his favorite sport, but he learned a lot about soccer and tennis that he never knew.
Jacob Moore, 8, said he also learned a lot about soccer.
“I learned how to move on the inside and outside of the line,” Moore said. “The most important thing I learned is don’t get too close to someone with the ball, even if you are playing defender.”
By the end of the week, Moore had added soccer to his list of favorite sports.
King was thrilled with the kids’ excitement and believes this was one of the best camps the recreation authority has ever hosted as far as sports learning. She looks forward to hosting another camp next summer and broadening even more kid’s horizons.
