What child can resist the fun and fantasy of Mary Poppins?

Certainly not the 23 young actors in the Bainbridge Little Theatre Childen’s Class Act production of Mary Poppins Jr. They are having a blast taking on the roles made famous by Julie Andrews, Dick VanDyke and others in the Disney made movie first released August, 1964.

Most of the children claimed to have seen the movie at least once, while one proudly proclaimed her dad owned a CD. When asked what they liked best about being in the play they responded without any hesitation “the music.”

The music has been loved by children and families for many years. They especially like singing “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” probably the best-known song. Some of the other familiar ones are ChimChim Cheree, A Spoonful of Sugar, Let’s Go Fly a Kite and Jolly Holiday.

The role of Mary Poppins, in the local version is played by Chloe Mazzei. This is her first appearance on the BLT stage. She is a rising sixth grade student.

Cooper Genovar, now considered a young veteran of the stage, has appeared not only in previous summer Class Act plays, but has nailed roles in regular BLT productions. He takes on the role of Bert.

The costumes are authentically British and the children seem to enjoy playing dress-up in them.

If you want to attend either the Friday or Saturday night show, or the Sunday matinee, you will need to get your tickets now. Rumor has it that they are nearly sold out for some performances.

The production, under the direction of Rachel Crager, takes the stage Friday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
