Bainbridge bypass lanes reopening today

The southbound lanes of Hwy. 84 are expected to reopen around 3 p.m. today.

Georgia Department of Transportation crews are in the process of removing barrels that had blocked access to the area. The boom of an excavator hit the SR 253/Spring Creek Road bridge on the bypass Monday morning and damaged two beams. The bypass southbound lanes and the bridge were closed at that time. There were no injuries in the crash.

The SR 253 bridge will remain closed until it can be repaired. Drivers are using the SR 253 Spur and US 27 Business/Dothan Road as a detour.

Southern Concrete Construction Co. was called in on an emergency basis to remove the damaged beams and began working early Tuesday morning. The next step is the repair of the bridge. Georgia DOT is soliciting bids for a construction contract to make emergency repairs. Until a contract is awarded a completion date for the work will not be released. Any lane or road closures needed for repairs will be announced in advance.
