Bearcats shutout Cairo, claw Early Co.

The Bainbridge Bearcats baseball team added two more marks to the win column when they beat Cairo last Thursday 8-0 and took down Early County Monday 5-1.

Nick Barber started on the hill for Bainbridge and threw a gem, going all seven innings and allowing zero runs on four hits and striking out eight.

Bainbridge (13-11) secured the victory thanks to six runs in the fourth inning thanks to Ivan Velasquez, Griffin Long, Will Kelley, and Caleb Boutwell all knocking in runs.

Bainbridge opened up scoring in the second inning, when Velasquez drew a walk, scoring one run.

The Bearcats notched six runs in the fourth inning. Velasquez, Long, Kelley, and Boutwell all contributed in the big inning with RBIs.

The Bearcats had nine hits in the game. Kelley and Dalton Harrell each managed multiple hits. Kelley went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the team in hits.

Kelley was also productive in Monday’s win over the Bobcats, where he went 1-of-2 and scored a run.

Other players with hits were Michael Conder and Nick Barber.

Conder, Kelley, Wyatt Wilson, Boutwell and Barber all scored runs for the Bearcats.

Griffin Long started on the mound and went four innings, allowing three hits and a run while striking out five. Kaleb Varnum finished the last three innings with three strikeouts and allowing two hits.

Early County could only score one run despite recording five hits against the Bearcats.

Bainbridge plays  Tift County on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and Madison County Friday at 5:30 p.m. to finish off the regular season schedule. Both games are at the Bearcat Diamond.
