Bainbridge baseball gets pair of wins against Murray County in Saturday’s doubleheader

The Bainbridge baseball team enjoyed the warm weather and a pair of wins last Saturday in a doubleheader against Murray County, beating the Indians 5-0 and 16-0 to take a 2-1 start to the season.
Nick Barber started on the mound in game one, striking out 13 Indians and allowing just two hits through six innings. Kaleb Varnum relieved him in the seventh and struck out two.
Caleb Boutwell led the Bearcats at the plate, going 2-of-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Walt Burrell also had a big game with 1-of-3 and 3 runs scored. Burrell and Griffin Long both had doubles.
Bainbridge got nine hits off Murray County pitcher Logan Palmer.
The Bearcats run-ruled Murray County in game two, piling on 13 runs in the bottom of the fourth by capitalizing on errors and finding gaps in the Indians’ defense. Bainbridge scored 2 in the bottom of the first and another run in the third inning.
Will Kelley was starting pitcher and held off the Indians for three innings, allowing just three hits, striking out four and letting his defense handle the rest. Walt Burrell relieved him in the fourth inning, striking out two.
Eight different players got hits for Bainbridge, with Kelley and Conner Strickland leading the charge with two apiece.
Bainbridge played at Early County on Tuesday and will travel to Veterans High School for a region game Friday. First pitch is at 5:30 p.m.
