October 16, 2017

Catherine “Kathi” Cecelia deVerteuil, born 22 January 1938, lost her battle with cancer on 16 October, 2017. She was a mother to her 4 children and all their friends. Her love for others had no limitations as expressed daily. Kathi was raised by a single mother in Queens New York before moving to Miami where she met Leo “Joe” deVerteuil. They were married 58 years. She and her husband Joe established an accounting firm in Tallahassee until they retired and traveled the world together. This past year as she was struggling with cancer she accomplished a major goal in her life and found her sister, Joanne Sweeney Bowen, from her father’s family. The two met, with other members of her lost family, in Atlanta where Kathi was undergoing chemo-therapy at Emory Hospital. Kathi is survived by her husband Leo deVerteuil, sister Joanne Sweeney Bowen, daughter Mary Gallagher, son Jim deVerteuil, son John deVerteuil, daughter Betsy deVerteuil, 3 grandchildren Kati, Andrew, and Ashleigh and 2 great-grandchildren Winifred and Rosemary. She is preceded in death by her brother Peter Sweeney, sister Muriel Sweeney, and her grandson Michael Gallagher. Kathi leaves behind a legacy in Tallahassee, Fla. and Bainbridge, Ga. as an active woman with an incredibly large and kind heart that was always presented with an incredible smile. Honoring her incredible life there will be a service held 2 pm Friday 20, October 2017, at Good Shepard Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers Kathi requested that donations be made to the Gary Sinise Foundation to support those who serve and honor the American people.
