Ladawn Edwards, 25, was arrested Wednesday night after stabbing a man in an apartment on South West Street.

Bainbridge Public Safety responded to a disturbance call around 10:30 p.m. when a woman dialed 911 and said a male was beating on her car window, covered in blood and saying he was cut. The officers arrived on scene and saw that Earl (Matt) Tillman, 30, had lacerations on his chest and neck area and was bleeding on the side of the road.

EMS arrived and transported Tillman to the Bainbridge Memorial Hospital. BPS arrested Edwards and charged him with aggravated assault.

Edwards confessed to the assault and explained an altercation started when his neighbor asked him to escort Tillman out of her apartment. Edwards began exchanging words with Tillman, according to Investigator Chris Avery. Then it became physical, starting with punches and eventually leading to the stabbing of Tillman.

Avery said Tillman was very lucky to be alive. At the time of the investigation, they were unsure if they would be covering an assault or a homicide. He said if the woman had not called last night, Tillman would probably not have been alive due to the amount of blood he had lost.

Investigators located Edwards back at his apartment after his girlfriend let them inside. He still had blood on his hands and spots of blood on his pants. However, investigators were unable to locate the weapon. Edwards told them it was a small purple knife, and he thinks it fell out of his pocket.

“It’s like looking for a needle in a haystack,” Avery said.

Tillman is currently still in the hospital with a stab wound to the chest. However, investigators are unsure of his state of health
