Hoyt Jackson “Buddy” Smallwood, Jr., age 70, passed away peacefully with his wife Sylvia by his side on August 10, 2017, at his beloved home in St. Johns, Florida. He was born March 12, 1947, in Bainbridge, Georgia, to Ruby Frances Smallwood and the late Hoyt Jackson Smallwood, Sr.
After graduating from Georgia Southwestern College with a BS degree in business, Hoyt began his career in erosion control, a profession spanning almost 50 years. He was founder and owner of The Ganwood Company, one of the largest commercial grassing companies and sod farms in North Florida, an accomplishment he was particularly proud of.
Hoyt is predeceased by his father Hoyt Jackson Smallwood, Sr., his step-son, Sgt. Bryan Tutten, and brother-in-law, Curtis Malone. Hoyt is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Sylvia (Tutten) Smallwood, mother Frances Smallwood, daughters Amy Caswell, Audrey Miller (Dan), April Smallwood, sisters Barbara (Lonnie) Stock, Patsy (Larry) Hauser, Debra Malone and brothers Joe (Natalie) Smallwood and William (Cheryl) Smallwood, sister-in-law Angela Young, and grandchildren Ethan, Dylan, Nathan, Quinn, Juniper, Catherine, Gareth, Mary, Mikaela, Ean, beloved nephew, Karl Deuschle, numerous nieces and nephews, mentee John Harrison and the devoted employees of The Ganwood Company.
A Service honoring Hoyt was held August 26, 2017, at Craig Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service at Attapulgus United Methodist Church has been rescheduled because of Hurricane Irma to be held Sunday, September 17, 2017, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Sgt. Bryan Tutten VFW Post 2391, 6184 US Hwy 1 South, St. Augustine, FL 32086 or to Attapulgus United Methodist Church, PO Box 26, Attapulgus, GA 39815.
