The Thomas M. & Irene B. Kirbo Charitable Foundation helped make the Decatur County Genealogical Society Library a reality for Bainbridge. The Decatur County Genealogical Society, Inc. is a 501 (C ) (3) non- profit organization. The society was established in 1995 and became a non-profit organization in 2013. With the extremely generous donation from the Kirbo foundation, a genealogy research library for the South West Georgia and North Florida areas has come to fruition. The library is a repository for Bibles, family documents, pictures, and other genealogy related materials.
The DCGS library, located at 215 E. Water Street, is holding a grand opening Sunday, August 27 from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. Anyone interested in genealogy research is encouraged to attend.
The library has over 600 books and records covering families from Southwest Georgia and the north Florida area. The library contains the collections of Mrs. Brenda King McNair and the late Mrs. Hazel Williams Copeland as well as numerous other collections. More records and books from other contributors are added each week.
In addition to researching your family history, you can also sign up for a genealogy or DNA class or a Scrapbooking class focusing on family history. More activities are planned.
The society is not to be confused with the Historical Museum in Bainbridge. These are two completely separate organizations.
