Senior wide receiver and safety Zyon McGee committed to the Georgia Southern Eagles on Twitter Sunday.
He paired his announcement with a photo of himself suited up in an Eagles uniform with the words “Committed to the Lifestyle” underneath him.
“I chose southern when me and my parents went there,” McGee said. “It just felt real comfortable. Everything was just laid back just like here in Bainbridge and that’s what I’m used to.”
McGee made his start as a Bearcat wide receiver his sophomore year, catching 31 passes for 387 yards and three touchdowns. He returned his junior year to catch 13 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns.
He found his groove on the defensive side of the ball, however, and started more than half the season at safety. It was there he made 31 tackles, had two interceptions, including a pick-6, and recorded eight passes defensed.
McGee said he will play outside linebacker at Georgia Southern.
“I just liked the atmosphere and I’m majoring in psychology and they offer that program there,” McGee said. “I’ll be preparing to transition to work from Bainbridge to Statesboro and they told me some stuff to work on, so I can work on that here.”
Coach Jeff Littleton, who has coached McGee all four years of high school, said he was proud of the decision his player made.
“I’m proud of his accomplishments on and off the field,” Coach Jeff Littleton said. “I want what’s best for him. And if he and his family felt like that’s what best for him, then I’m proud of him.”
“I’m just looking forward to getting down there and being an Eagle,” McGee said.
See McGee play this season for Bainbridge, starting with a scrimmage against Lowndes County at Centennial Field on Aug. 12.
