Iris was born in Mt. Airy, N.C. on October 17, 1925. Her husband of 58 years, Lt. Col. Laurence F. Sorrels, preceded her in death August, 2002, and she is survived by two brothers, James Henry Dunnagan, Arvin Dunnagan, both of NC; three sons, Lawrence Allen Sorrels of Bainbridge, Ga., Steve Philip Sorrels of Storrs, Conn., Robert Kenyon Sorrels of Folsom, Calif.; four granddaughters, Julea, Christine, Tanya and Nikki; one great-granddaughter Caitlyn and many nieces and nephews.

Iris met her husband while working at an airport restaurant in Winston Salem, N.C. during World War II. During his air force service Iris lived in Germany and Okinawa. Then after her husband’s retirement, in Sacramento, Calif., Harlingen, Texas, Kernersville, N.C., and after his death in N. Fort Myers, Fla., then in Bainbridge, Ga.

Iris was a serious student of the Bible and was baptized in July 1957, as one of Jehovah’s witnesses, remaining active in her ministry as a Bible teacher for 60 years.

Her modest, self-sacrificing spirit, kindness and generosity was an example worthy of imitation.

Iris wholeheartedly believed and found comfort in the promise that Jehovah God has made at Revelation, Chapter 21 verse 4: “And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”
