Gayle said he was excited, recounting how hard he’s worked over the years to play at the next level.

“Ever since YMCA basketball, I’ve been playing,” Gayle said.

Gayle, 5-foot-10, started 28 games this season as a senior, averaging 13.6 points per game, 2.7 assists, four rebounds and 1.6 steals.

He led the team by a wide margin in scoring with 380 points.

Bainbridge Coach Terry Smith said when he was hired before the 2016-17 season, Gayle was the first player to reach out to him on social media.

“From day one, he has always bought in, bought in to what we were trying to do. He was accustomed to a certain system for three years, and senior year he had to transition and try to get himself ready. He did a great job with that.”

Going all the way back to summer practice, Gayle never missed a workout, Smith said.

“That was huge,” Smith said. “That’s dedication. That’s saying I want to be the best I can be.”
