Bainbridge State College to host free journalism workshops with Tallahassee Democrat

Bainbridge State College is pleased to invite the public to two free “Hot Off the Press” Journalism Workshops with the Tallahassee Democrat on Monday, April 10, at 2:30 p.m., and Thursday, April 13, at 10 a.m., in room 952, upstairs of the Student Wellness Center on the Bainbridge campus.

On Monday, April 10, at 2:30 p.m., James Call, the Tallahassee Democrat Capitol Reporter will conduct a workshop on journalism and life as a Capitol Reporter. Call is the former Florida Public Radio Capitol Bureau Chief, former WTXL-TV Executive Producer, former Editor of Florida Wildlife Magazine and former Associate Editor of Research in Review Magazine. After receiving a degree from Youngstown State University, he traveled to Fort Myers (Fla.), and became a FM radio news reporter.

Call commented on his career as the Tallahassee Democrat Capital Reporter, “Folks here will debate for hours a proposal they fully support. They love to talk. I listen and write. I’m the Tallahassee Observer.”

The workshops will continue on Thursday, April 13, at 10 a.m., with Andrew Skerritt, a storytelling coach/news editor for the Tallahassee Democrat.

He is a former columnist with the Hernando and Pasco Times (Tampa Bay Times) and author of Ashamed to Denial and the AIDS Epidemic in the South (Lawrence Hill Books).  He is also an adjunct instructor of English composition at Tallahassee Community College. He formerly taught journalism at Florida A&M University.

He holds a bachelor’s in journalism from Howard University, an MLA from Winthrop University and an MFA in creative nonfiction from the University of Tampa. His essays and nonfiction regarding exile, displacement and the search for home have been published widely in publications such as the Root.com, Tampa Bay Times, Caribbean Quarterly, and Miami Herald and elsewhere. He grew up on the Caribbean island of Montserrat.
