Bearcats win two of three games heading into the final stretch of the season

Bainbridge won two games in two days this week, taking down Leon (Tallahassee) 2-1 Wednesday and beating Thomas County Central 10-3 in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday.

Bainbridge (10-10, 3-7 region) dropped the second game against the Yellow Jackets 4-3.

Freshman pitcher Kaleb Varnum got his first varsity start against Leon, earning the win for the Bearcats. He went six innings, allowing one run, three hits and striking out five.

Varnum’s pitching kept the Bearcats in the game until the offense could get going in the bottom of the sixth. Leon had just scored a run in the top of the sixth, and Bainbridge came down with two runs to take the lead.

Nick Barber took care of business on the mound the last inning, striking out a batter and earning the save.

Will Kelley was responsible for both of Bainbridge’s runs. He went 1-for-3 at the plate and had two RBIs. Kelley hit a single to left field, plating Carson Inlow and Noah Bryant.

Inlow was 2-for-3 and Bryant was 1-for-3.

Bainbridge came into Thursday’s doubleheader against TCC needing to win at least one game to hold their spot in Region 1-AAAAA, and it did just that.

Bainbridge was down 2-1 in the top of the fifth inning when Bryant singled to drive in two runs.

Bainbridge was on fire at the plate in the seventh inning, scoring six runs. A single by Keith Lyle, a home run by Kelley and a double by Nick Barber highlighted the inning.

Kelley pitched all seven innings to earn the win. He only gave up three runs, six hits, striking out three, and walking zero.

The Bearcats had 15 hits in the game. Lyle, Kelley, Barber, Inlow and Noah Bryant each collected multiple hits for Bainbridge Lyle led the team by going 3-for-4.

Bainbridge almost came back late for the win in game two, but couldn’t catch up, losing 4-3.

TCC scored two runs in the first and another two in the second.

The Bearcats’ comeback effort was led by Bryant on an RBI single in the fifth inning down 4-0. A grounder by Lyle and an error plated Inlow and Bryant.

Dalton Harrell took the loss for Bainbridge Bearcats. He went one and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs, seven hits, striking out two, and walking one.

Barber filled in the rest of the game on the mound. He allowed one hit and struck out six.

Inlow went 3-for-3 at the plate. Bryant was also huge on offense, going 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run.

The Bearcats are back in action next Tuesday, April 4, against Johnson Central (KY).

Bainbridge’s final region games of the season come as a doubleheader against Warner Robins on Friday, April 7.
