Grace Tennis teams kick off 2017 season

The Grace Christian Academy boys and girls varsity teams kicked off GISA region play Monday, March 6 by hosting Westwood School and Southwest Georgia Academy. When all the matches were completed, the Lady Cougars walked away with a sweep, beating SGA in team play 4 matches to 1, and beating Westwood 3-2. The GCA boys team beat SGA 4-1 but lost to Westwood 3-2.
Clay Wells, the GCA number one boys singles player beat SGA’s number one, Tyner Cobb by a score of 8-1. Chasen Wood, the GCA two, lost his match to SGA’s two, Aaron Haire, but Jeb Smith, the GCA 3, handily defeated Ty Cooper of SGA 8-0.
Caroline Wells dropped a close match to Emily Earnest of SGA in girls singles play, but Mikey Harrell beat Sarah Beth Griffin of SGA 8-0 and Carly Godwin beat SGA’s Laney Hall 8-1. In girls doubles play against SGA, Sara Castoro and Olivia Penela won decisively, as did Kate McRae and Abbey Mills.
In the Westwood matches, Clay Wells beat Westwood’s number one player, Cole Pollock 8-3. Chasen Wood lost his match against Brent Johnson, but Jeb Smith won a thrilling match against Brantley Shiver that was decided in a tiebreaker. The GCA boys doubles team of Branch Austinson and Thad Whitaker lost to their Westwood rivals, Brock Allen and Cameron Godwin.
In girls play, Mikey Harrell lost a close match to Westwood’s McKenlee Coleman, but Caroline Wells had no trouble beating Amanda Hosey 8-0. Carley Godwin beat Lauren Allen 8-6. In girls doubles play against Westwood, Sarah Castoro and Olivia Penela won their match while Kate McRae and Abbey Mills dropped theirs.
Coach Rhonda Wells said she was very pleased with the first matches of the season and encouraged by the play of her team.
