Vicky Lynn Kemp was a strong believer in the power of education and what it can do for a student’s future.

She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Utah State University. She then moved to Selma (Ala.) where she began her first teaching job. It was there that she taught Reading to children in a poverty-stricken area. Her daughter, Charity Trawick, remembered her mother’s memories of the children arriving to school without shoes.

“My mother developed a strong opinion during this time about whether or not individuals would be able to rise out of poverty,” she said. “She concluded that the determining factor was education. She felt that regardless of whether they received a doctorate or an associate degree that their lives would be richer and more rewarding.”

Eventually, Kemp chose to end her career in professional teaching and focus her talents on educating her four children. Over the years, she devoted countless hours to tutoring children and teens who were struggling in school.

“She was determined to help others succeed,” said Trawick.

The educator was a lifetime learner and avid reader of classic literature and poetry.

Her daughter remembered, “She would call me excitedly when she gleaned something new from a work that she was reading to discuss it—and I loved this about her. She would truly be so happy about this scholarship being established in her name and that a student will be able to attain his or her goals because of it.”
