Sen. Dean Burke (R – Bainbridge) honored physicians who completed the “Scholarship Program” through the Georgia Board of Physician Workforce with a presentation of Senate Resolution 117 in the Senate last Friday.
“It is an honor to recognize such a distinguished group in the Senate,” said Sen. Burke. “I wouldn’t be here without the program so I know firsthand the great things this program does for aspiring physicians. Providing accessible health care to underserved communities remains an important issue. I am happy that this program prepares individuals to provide great health care throughout the state, especially in our rural communities.”

The “Scholarship Program,” formerly known as the Country Doctor Program, was established to address the physician workforce needs of Georgia’s underserved communities. The program was created in 1952 to increase the number of physicians practicing in rural Georgia by awarding service repayable scholarships to medical students. Since its inception, 1,668 Georgia medical students have received the benefit of this program.
