Funeral services for Lawrence “Buddy” McElvy, 81, of Whigham, Ga., are at 2 p.m., Thursday, February 16, 2017, at Climax Baptist Church, Climax, Ga.. Rev. Steve Poppell and Rev. Steve Brooks will officiate. Services will conclude at the church. Private interment will be in Union Spring Baptist Church Cemetery, Whigham. Mr. McElvy passed away at Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville, Ga., on Sunday, February 12, 2017.
Active pallbearers will be Dennis Poppell, Ken Ponder, Leonard Pearce, Lawson Taylor, Kim Brown and John Eakin. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Josh Sunday School Class of the Climax Baptist Church.
Mr. McElvy was born on December 26, 1935, in Quincy, FL, to the late Carl McElvy and Fannie Jacobs McElvy. On Nov. 8, 1957, he married Willeen Mobley McElvy, who preceded him in death on August 18, 2016. He retired as an electrician with Engelhard Corporation (BASF). He was a devoted member of Climax Baptist Church, Climax. He loved to work, go hunting and go fishing. He enjoyed sharing his tangerines with family and friends.
Survivors include: daughter, Charlotte Wilson (Kendall) of Whigham; son, Durwood McElvy (Mary Katherine) of Whigham; grandchildren, Brandy Shaw (Derek) of Whigham, Anthony Jones (Trista) of Donalsonville, Ga., Josh McElvy (Dana Brinkley) of Whigham, Cole McElvy (Morgan Bailey) of Whigham, Adam Jones (Rebecca) of Leesburg, Ga., Blake Roberts (Amy) of Lynn Haven, Fla., Jared Roberts (Stephanie) of Bristol, Fla., Sarah Fletcher (Justin) of Dixie, Ga.; great-grandchildren, Lawren Love, Holland Shaw, Willa Kate Shaw, Kyler Jones, Brantley Jones, Braxton Jones, Adalynn Roberts, Aubrey Roberts, Allie Roberts, Renner Roberts, Grace Spurlock, Brantlee Fletcher, Bowen Fletcher, Savannah Brinkley, Aleigha Bailey; sisters, Dora Galloway of Tallahassee, Fla., Lois Stookie of Titusville, Fla., Anna Warren of Melbourne, Fla.; sister-in-law, Marjorie Brown of Jacksonville; and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife; and brothers, Clayton Brown, Virlon Brown, Kimbrel Brown, Cleo Brown, Lewis Brown.
