Maxie Williams was born in Iron City, Georgia on September 14, 1926, to Rufus and Alice Mae Williams. He was a “depression era” child and grew up knowing how to cope with hard times. In 1943, when only 17 years old, he enlisted in the US Navy in Jacksonville, Florida.  After training he became a flight engineer and flew in many different type aircraft in the US and overseas. His service included tours on the US Naval Aircraft Carrier Forrestal and 11 years with the famed “Hurricane Hunters”.  Maxie was the heart and soul of the “Greatest Generation”.  Maxie married Ms. Shanna Slough in 1953 and had one son, Mark. After retiring from the Navy in 1964, Maxie settled in Daytona Beach, Florida and went to work for General Electric.  While at GE he was assigned to several space programs including the Apollo Support Program where his work was critical to putting “man on the moon”.  Maxie knew all the Apollo astronauts and worked for General Electric for 25 years.  He and Shanna built a beautiful home on the St Johns River near Deland, Florida, where they lived until 2003 when they moved to Donalsonville to be near his mother.  Maxie was active with the local VFW and Shriner’s association.

Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, Shanna Slough Williams; his son, Mark and his wife Kum; his granddaughter, Kimberly Williams; a brother, Fred Williams and his sisters, Carolyn Connell and Harriett Reynolds.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus and Alice Mae Williams; and two brothers, Roy Williams and Jack Williams
