Starting in December, the Earle May Boat Basin will be lit up brightly for a drive-through Christmas light show, courtesy of the City of Bainbridge and the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Businesses, clubs and individuals around the community have chipped in money to purchase light displays that will be set up along Hatcher Road by the Flint River.

Visitors can roll down the street while enjoying displays of the manger scene, reindeer and other bright holiday decorations.

The centerpiece of the drive through will be a 17-foot tall, 36-foot wide light-up display of a steamboat, paid for by Clayton Penhallegon, the estate of Ruben and Oleen Reynolds and the CVB.

Bainbridge Communications Director Julie Harris said the idea had been tossed around before, but last fall was when she and assistant city manager Roy Oliver decided to make the light display a reality in time for this Christmas. The other idea is to continue to add more and more pieces to the displays over the years, donated by the businesses, clubs and individuals who helped get this first show underway.

“For this year, we’ve done all we can do,” Harris said. “We hope it gets bigger and bigger.”

The light display will be set up through the end of December at the Earle May Boat Basin.
