A traffic stop on Broughton Street turned into a large drug bust for Bainbridge Public Safety officers Tuesday morning. Todd Davis Jr. was arrested in the bust on charges of possession with intent to distribute, possession with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of a park or housing project and obstructing law enforcement officers.

PSO Jason Myers initiated the traffic stop around 10 a.m. after observing a 2000 Chevy Cavalier driving on the wrong side of the road near Sims Street.

“During the investigation, the officer observed a strong odor of green marijuana coming from inside the vehicle,” Investigator Chris Avery said.

The odor of marijuana gave the BPS officer probable cause to search the vehicle for contraband according to Avery.

“He began searching the vehicle, and found a brick of vacuum packed marijuana on the passenger of the vehicle,” Avery said. “He also located another baggie of marijuana on the drivers side. There were also several other baggies that are commonly used in the packaging and distributing of marijuana.”

In all, more than a pound of marijuana valued at more than $1,000 was confiscated by BPS.

“After the officer [Myers] found the weed, he started approaching the passenger [Davis Jr.],” Avery said. “He told the assisting officer to arrest him. When the suspect heard that, he jumped up from sitting down and began running.”

Davis Jr. reportedly made it about 20 feet before being re-apprehended by officers and placed under arrest. Davis was charged with possession of the marijuana and the driver was released without being charged.

“The driver was denying everything the whole time,” Avery said. “Eventually we got to the bottom of it and [Davis Jr.] admitted to everything.”

According to Avery, they have evidence that Davis Jr. was repackaging the marijuana and selling it. Further tests are being done by investigator Mark Esquivel to determine the quality of marijuana.
