Pilot Club to Roast Dr. Suzi Bonifay

Tuesday October 18, promises to be an interesting evening when the Bainbridge Pilot Club holds its annual dinner Roast at the Firehouse Art Center at 7 p.m.

Retired educator, Dr. Suzi Bonifay, will be on the receiving end of the good-natured gibes, jokes and insults this year.

Bonifay, who was the emcee at last year’s roast of BHS Principal Tommie Howell, should probably brace herself for some “pay back.” It is rumored that some of her former students and co-workers will be on hand to tell the real stories of Bonifay’s tenure in the Decatur County Schools.

Bonifay came to Decatur County in 1986, as assistant principal at Hutto Middle School, then went to Bainbridge Middle School in the same capacity in 1990, before being named principal at Bainbridge Middle School. About that same time she earned a doctorate of education from Florida State University and was promoted to the Decatur County Department of Education Central office as director of secondary curriculum.

An even larger pool of possible roasters comes from her community involvements. Bonifay has served as chairman of the board of the Chamber of Commerce, the board of the Arts Council and is a former chair of the Bainbridge-Decatur County United Way.

Mary Lynn White is scheduled to be the emcee for this year. As a former teacher, she probably has some tidbits to tell that will add fuel to the fire.

To get in on the fun, get a $25 ticket from Emily Yent at the Broughton Street Edward Jones Office. The roast is the major fundraiser for the local Pilot Club and all proceeds go to support the several community charities.
