Lots of cupcakes, icings of different colors and a variety of toppings were distributed at the Bainbridge/Decatur County Senior Center to approximately 30 attendees who tapped into their creative juices to see who could decorate the best cupcake. The event was sponsored by the Bainbridge-Decatur County Recreation Authority, which is exploring new opportunities to provide services for seniors in the community. The cakes were donated by Toadally Cakes.

There was lots of laughter and good-natured challenges among the cake decorators, some of whom were grooving to the background music as they frosted their cakes. One team of contestants, calling themselves The Butter Beans, came from Four Seasons Family Home attired in chef’s hats and matching T-shirts to add a touch of competitive spirit to the event.

When all the cakes were iced and decorated, they were judged by Recreation Authority members, Joey Lee, Valerie Faircloth and Allen Madge.

Third place winner was Ruby Samuel, second was Jennie McGouirk, and first place went to Gloria Simpson. Winners were each given a gift basket containing a coloring book, crayons, a cake mix, Little Debbie treats and a candle.

The group, mostly ladies who are living independently, can come to the Center every weekday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to enjoy crafts, games and other activities together. They are also served a warm lunch. One of the regulars said she really appreciated coming to the Senior Center activities, that if it weren’t for the Senior Center, she probably wouldn’t get out of the house very often or socialize with others.

The next event planned for the Seniors by the Authority is an exercise session next Tuesday.
