Just in time for the first day of school on Aug. 5, the state of Georgia will be hosting a tax-free weekend for clothing, computers and school supplies on July 30 and 31.

“We definitely see an increase in customers for tax-free, and it also helps that it’s the weekend before school starts back,” said Randee Eubanks, who owns Bella’s Boutique.

Tax-exempt items include clothing and footwear with a price of less than $100 per item. Items included are T-shirts, coats and undergarments and also shoe insoles, active wear, skates and diapers.

Items that are not tax-free include accessories such as belt buckles and wallets, as well as hair accessories, fanny packs and handbags.

In computers, items that are under $1,000 are tax-free including laptops, printer ink, flash drives and tablets. Items not included in the tax-free holiday include computer bags, cameras and items related to gaming.

School supplies up to $20 per item are included except envelopes, briefcases and medical supplies.

The tax holiday is a chance for parents to save money while stocking up on supplies for the whole year.

“I’m hoping to see a variety of supplies and looking forward to saving at least $40,” said Rhonda McMillan, mother of rising eighth grader, Robbie McMillan Jr.

The stores also see an influx of shoppers, and some, like Bella’s Boutique, will be running additional sales to help parents save even more money.

“We also have a back-to-school sale going on right now,” Eubanks said. “Its just percentages off a lot of our summer clothing. We have stuff all the way up to 75-percent off.”
