Donald Ray Smith, 89, of Bainbridge, Ga., passed away Friday, April 15, 2016.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Stephen L. Webb and Rev. Mike Brown officiating. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service. Members and former members of the Boy Scouts of America who shared time with Don are invited to serve as honorary pallbearers, and meet at the church at 1:45 for group seating. Don was born February 28, 1927 in Purvis, Miss., the son of Chasie and Claudia Smith. He was a graduate of Lumberton High School, Class of 1945 and was a retired superintendent for Chevron Asphalt Company. Don devoted over 50 years volunteering for Boy Scouts of America, receiving the Silver Beaver Award in 1976 and honored with membership in the Brotherhood of the Order of The Arrow in 1995. He was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Pat Smith of Bainbridge; his daughter, Kathy Smith of Bainbridge; his son, Mike Smith and his wife, Janet, of Bainbridge; his brothers, A.L. “Pud” Smith of Purvis, and Bobby P. Smith and his wife, Ellen, of Tacoma, Wash.; his sisters, Dean Hensarling of Picayune, Miss. and Merita Smith and her husband, Lee, of Carbondale, Ill.; his grandchildren, Heidi Smith and her husband, Robert, of Iron City, Ga., Joshua Higginbotham of Bainbridge, and Ashley Weed and her husband, Troy, of Troy, Ala.; and his great-grandchildren, Allie Brock, Elizabeth Gay, and Mary Thomas Weed.
