The Bainbridge High School varsity soccer teams traveled to Quitman for a pair of non-region games Tuesday night. Both teams came home with victories over the host Brooks County Trojans and Lady Trojans.
In the girls’ contest the Lady Bearcats (8-5) defeated the Lady Trojans by scoring goals in each half for a final 2-0 score.
In the first half the Lady Cats took a 1-0 lead when junior midfielder Haley Thompson scored a goal in the 26th minute.
Thompson received a throw-in from Bainbridge sophomore defender Kamerin Timmons, in the Brooks County Penalty Area, and quickly tapped the ball between two defenders before sending a scoring shot in from 16 yards away.
In the 67th minute, the lead was extended to 2-0 when Bainbridge senior utility player Derrical Williams converted a penalty kick. The score was a result of Thompson being fouled in the penalty area and Williams stepping in and calmly striking a shot to the left side of the goal for the final score on the night.
Senior goalkeeper Grace McIntosh was credited with the shutout and three saves.
“Bainbridge, as a whole, played well,” Lady Cats’ head coach Chip Arial said. “A majority of the contest was controlled well and kept on the Lady Trojan end of the field.”
The Bearcats (7-3-1) got behind early in the boys’ contest, but rallied to win a hard fought 3-1 victory.
In the seventh minute the Trojans took an early 1-0 lead after a long pass to a Brooks County forward enabled him to split the Bainbridge defense. He finished the play with a shot from 16-yards away for the first goal.
Bainbridge tied the score in the 28th minute, as senior defender Evan Oldaker scored on a penalty kick. Oldaker’s score resulted from a foul by a Trojan defender, on Bearcat freshman forward Caleb Harris, on a breakaway in the penalty area. Oldaker then powered a shot up the middle, past the keeper for the score.
One minute before the half, Bainbridge took the lead at 2-1, as senior midfielder Bennett Enfinger scored on a header from six-yards out. The play was assisted by Bearcat senior midfielder Jesus Contreras, who had carried a pass down the right side, to the end line, and found Enfinger with a crossing pass over the Brooks County goalkeeper’s head.
The final score on the night came in the 53rd minute, as Enfinger lofted a pass to the center of the Trojan penalty area, to Harris, who struck a volley shot from 18-yards out for the goal.
