The Bainbridge High School Lady Bearcats Varsity Soccer team travelled to Cairo Tuesday night to play the Cairo High School Lady Syrupmaids and came back home with a 3-0 region victory.

The Lady Bearcats scored their first goal, in the 15th minute when senior utility player Derrical Williams stole the ball deep in Cairo territory and quickly shot past the Syrupmaid goalkeeper from 12 yards away to give Bainbridge a 1-0 lead. Williams’ goal was the only scoring of the first half.

Fifteen minutes into the second half Cairo tried to even the score. The referee awarded Cairo a penalty shot following a foul by a Bainbridge defender in the penalty area, but the penalty kick attempt was saved by Bainbridge senior goalkeeper Grace McIntosh, on a shot up the middle.

The Lady Bearcats extended the lead to 2-0, in the 57th minute, when Lady Cat junior midfielder Summer Boyd knocked a penalty kick inside the left post. The penalty kick was given, due to a Cairo defender fouling junior midfielder Mallory West from behind in the penalty area.

The final goal came in the 69th minute when Boyd intercepted a failed clearance pass and lofted a kick from 40 yards away that took a high bounce and went over the Cairo goalkeeper’s head at the six yard box into the goal for the final score.

McIntosh finished with six saves and the shutout. Bainbridge improves to 3-3 on the season and 2-1 in region play.

In the boys varsity contest Cairo High School jumped out to a 3-0 first half lead en route to a 5-0 victory.

The Syrupmakers scored in the 3rd minute of the contest when junior forward Aldair Cortez received a pass outside the Bearcat penalty area and turned and scored on a 25 yard shot from the right side, to give Cairo a 1-0 lead.

In the 24th minute a miscue by the Bearcat defense allowed a Syrupmaker forward to sneak a shot in for a goal 12 yards away that increased the lead to 2-0.

The final goal of the half came with less than two minutes remaining as Cortez worked the ball past several Bainbridge defenders, finishing with a 6 yard shot to the right side of the goal.

In the second half the Syrupmakers scored two more goals in the 55th and 64th minute, following a free kick deflection that was shot in from 2 yards away and a penalty kick conversion.

Bainbridge drops to 2-3-1 on the season and 2-1 in region play.

Both squads hosted Cook County High School last night at Centennial Field.
