BHS boys basketball defeated Eagles Landing 80-49, advance to second round of state

Tyree Crump and Myles Thomas combined for 32 points Wednesday night to lead the Bainbridge High School Bearcats to an 80-49 first round State Class AAAA Basketball Tournament victory over the Eagles Landing High School Eagles.

The Bearcats took a commanding early lead over Eagles Landing Wednesday scoring the first 19 points of the game. Thomas hit layups off the left and right glass to give the Bearcats a quick 4-0 lead. A jumper by Crump made it 6-0.

Devonta Williams hit a three-point jumper from the left side to put the Bearcats up 9-0. A layup off the right glass at the 4:16 mark of the first quarter made it 11-0.Crump followed with a layup off the left glass to increase the advantage to 13-0.

The final six points of the 19-0 run came on two three-point jumpers from the right side by Crump.

“We came out with a lot of intensity and focus and continued to build our lead,” Head Coach Rickey McCullough said. “I could not be prouder of our players.”

The Eagles responded by scoring the final eight points of the quarter to enter the second quarter trailing 19-8.

The Bearcats increased their advantage to 13, at 26-13, when Trevon Shaw hit a layup off the right glass with 3:36 left in the second quarter.

Myles Thomas followed with a three-point jumper from the right to make it 29-13.The Bearcats allowed the Eagles to close the gap late for the second straight quarter and held only a 33-24 at halftime.

The Bearcats opened the third quarter with six straight points to go up 39-24. The points came on three-point jumpers by Thomas and Crump. Those were just the first two buckets in a dominant quarter as the Bearcats stretched their lead to 53-30 entering the fourth quarter.

Williams and Shaw opened the fourth quarter with a layup off the left glass and a free throw to quickly increase the advantage to 56-30. The pair continued to pile it on down the stretch as the Bearcats pulled away for a 31-point victory.

The Bearcats take on Sandy Creek High School Saturday in Tyrone.
